Celebrating San Luis Obispo County Wineries
BonJour and Happy June!
The Central Coast, in this case, San Luis Obispo County, has a vast assortment of really stellar wineries!
In North County,(Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero) the weather is cool in the winter and HOT in the summer so the dark red lust wines: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and blends, are especially delicious!
San Luis Obispo and the Edna Valley wine appellation enjoys the breezes and temperate climate from the ocean. The temperatures are never really hot nor really cold so Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grow especially well and are really yummy (great descriptive word, no?) as are some of the Rhone varietals.
I have chosen a delightful seven wines that I feel really highlight this area:
Ancient Peaks 2008 Sauvignon Blanc Mike Sinor is one of our favorite people and just happens to be the winemaker for this SB from Santa Margarita Ranch. Lots of apricot and pear flavors with a nice minerally finish.
Chamisal Stainless 2008 Chardonnay Chamisal Vineyards has so many great wines!! I thought the stainless Chardonnay would be nice because it pairs so nicely with food - often time a heavy oaked Chardonnay takes over the food.
Red Zeppelin Cellars 2008 Viognier I am really excited that we got this wine because it is sold out! Beautifully fragrant and floral, I think this wine will be loved by all.
Sonnet 2008 Prose Rose Another rose absolutely perfect for the warmer spring temperatures. This rose is from PInot Noir grapes, it is dry with flavors of red cherry and rose petals.
Grey Wolf Cellars Lone wold Red Those lucky folks that stay at Petit and ask about wine tasting in Paso will always hear my recommendation of Grey Wolf Cellars. It really is one of my favorite wineries! This Lone Wolf is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Grenache and Syrah. It is, in my mind, a perfect wine!
Vina Robles 2007 RED 4 Hold on to your pants! This is a huge, dark lusty red blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Tannat and Touriga. I will pair this with sausage as part of our appetizers when we serve this wine.
Tolosa 2007 Syrah Tolosa Winery, located about 10 minutes from Petit, always produces a delightful Syrah and this vintage was just released, It has loads of berry and plum flavors with a nice peppery spice finish.
So that's it for June wines. If you don't already know, we serve one of the whites the rose and one of the reds every evening with appetizers paired especially for these wines. And as always, if there is a wine that you would like to try that we are not serving, just ask! It is what wine tasting is all about!
Cheers,
Dianne
